Text Box: Facts About Smoking
Smoking costs Indiana
The most obvious cost in dollar terms is for healthcare and lost productivity associated with tobacco-related illnesses. Another cost is the pain and suffering of individual smokers and the fact that their quality of life is reduced and their life span shortened by smoking.
No matter how you measure it, the price of tobacco use in Indiana is astounding. Nearly $2,000,000,000 are spent annually on tobacco-related healthcare expenses in Indiana.

Smoking costs us all
You don't have to be a smoker to feel the pinch of tobacco-related healthcare costs. The tax burden Indiana citizens must bear for state- and federal-government sponsored healthcare programs is staggering with more than $200,000,000 spent annually for tobacco-related illnesses suffered by Indiana's Medicaid recipients. Additional tobacco-related healthcare spending includes other costs, such as direct exposure to secondhand smoke, accidental fires from smoking, and smokeless tobacco use.

Non-healthcare costs
In addition to the healthcare costs there are lists of non-health-related expenditures that cost Hoosiers personal expense, increased insurance premiums and taxes. One of these non-health expenses includes residential and commercial property losses from smoking-related fire damage. In addition, employers lose business from lost work productivity due to smoking-related illnesses, poor employee performance and early termination caused by tobacco-related health problems.
